Sunless Tanning - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1

Why is a specially formulated sunless exfoliating scrub (like California Tan Exfoliator) better for my sunless tan in comparison to my regular exfoliating scrub?
A: When exfoliating the skin prior to a sunless application, it is important to not only remove dry flaky skin that can cause uneven results, but also to remove any residue from soaps and moisturizers that can leave a film on the skin and/or oils that create a barrier to the sunless ingredients. It is important to use an oil-free scrub that will leave the skin fresh and primed for optimal sunless application and not add additional oil to the skin. California Tan Exfoliator and California Tan Exfoliator Towelettes are specially formulated for use with self tanners and are oil-free products.

2

How does Barrier Cream work?
A:Barrier Cream provides a protective barrier layer to prevent the penetration of DHA into the upper layers of the skin, thus preventing staining. Certain areas of the body, like the palms of the hands, bottom of the feet, cuticles, and nails are more porous and stain easily. Therefore, these areas should be covered with an even layer of barrier cream to prevent unwanted discoloration.

3

Will the sunless tanning lotion come off on my clothes?
A: Yes. After your treatment but before your shower both the cosmetic bronzers and DHA can rub/sweat off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning, or perspire in a warm environment. To minimize the chance of the tint transferring to clothing, we recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your sunless tan application. The colour is water-soluble and easily washes out of cotton and most fabrics. As an extra precaution, avoid wool, nylon or silk which can be difficult to wash.

4

Will the sunless tanning lotion affect the color of my nails or nail polish?
A: The lotion will not discolor nail polish. However, it can cause unnatural coloration of cuticles and nails. Therefore, we recommend you apply California Tan Barrier Cream to nails and cuticles prior to a sunless tan application to avoid any discoloration. For extra care, try a clear polish to maintain nail appearance as colour transfer sometimes happens when wearing closed shoes in a warm environment due to foot perspiration even a few days after treatment.

5

Will a sunless tanning lotion discolor my hair?
A: DHA reacts with proteins. As hair is a protein, it can discolor some hair types if it penetrates the hair follicles. Those with treated or light hair, such as blonde, white, or grey hair should take extra precautions. It is recommended you wear a protective hair cap to ensure protection from discoloration, but make sure the forehead, ears, and hairline are exposed. Those with light hair (blonde, grey, or white) or men with facial hair can also apply a thin layer of barrier cream into the hair on to the temples, hairline and moustaches/beards to avoid discoloration.

6

Is it safe for pregnant women to sunless tan?
A: There are no known risks associated with DHA or other common sunless tanning ingredients with pregnancy. However, any medical advice is beyond the scope of this website, and we hope any pregnant women will consult their physician for the most current information available.

7

If I do a terrible job the first time I try to selftan, can I start over?
A: Yes. If you need to start over, soak in the bath for about 20 minutes and with some body scrub, exfoliate thoroughly. Another option is to use a Tan Corrector Kit or some nail polish remover on stubborn areas. The tan should come off quite easily depending on how quickly you start soaking after your application. After this, you should be able to start again with a new application.

8

How do I lighten a sunless tanned area that is noticeably darker than the rest of my skin?
A: Next time you are in the shower, use a Tan Corrector Kit or fine foot file to gently rub over the area that is darker. The sunless tan affects the dead skin cells. Exfoliating the problem areas will remove the dead skin cells and lighten the colour in that area

9

My selftanning lotion is too dark but I'm already using the lightest shade available. What can I do to make my tan look more natural?
A: Try using a Tan Extender instead, or mixing some moisturizer in with the selftanning lotion. This will dilute the effect of the final result as well as making it easier to apply. Experiment with different amounts until you find your desired shade. If you feel that you want to try a darker shade, add a little less moisturizer.

10

I thought I was going to be darker. Can I apply the self-tanner again?
A: If you have already waited for the product to set and showered, then yes. You will be adding more colour to the colour you already have. If you have not yet showered after your application then applying more solution won’t make you darker.

11

Can I tan in addition to sunless tanning?
A: Yes you can, although you should either tan just prior to your sunless tanning treatment or after you have showered after your sunless tanning treatment. Tanning while waiting for your sunless tanning treatment to set is not advisable as colour can transfer from the sweating likely during UV exposure. Many people do both UV tanning and sunless tanning, using sunless tanners to accentuate face or leg colour.
